TEHRAN – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) plans to promote tourism industry in the north central Iranian city of Semnan.

UNIDO Representative in Iran Alessandro Amadio, heading a delegation, paid a visit to Semnan on Wednesday.
The UNIDO delegation toured Semnan to explore potentialities of the city according to its historical features, he said.

The historical structure of Semnan city and its handicraft industry are two important factors for attracting tourists, he added.

Pottery and ceramic artworks, as well as carpet weaving, are main handicrafts produced in Semnan.

“Attracting foreign investors to renovate and preserve historical sites of the city is one of the ways to boost tourism industry,” he added.

The UNIDO delegation also paid a visit to Semnan historical bazaar, as well as to Jameh mosque and Arg Gate.

Over 1500 historical monuments in Semnan Province have been registered on Iran’s National Heritage List.
